Water Level at the Reservoir Lowered this Week

The Reservoir Alliance is gearing up for the spring and summer! You might notice some changes, including water being pumped from the lake by the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority (JCMUA). In our determined efforts to maintain the Reservoir as both a space for community recreation and ecological preservation, the water level will be reduced a few feet over the next several days. The City of Jersey City has worked with the Reservoir Alliance to make this lowering possible and all necessary permits for the project have been approved by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

This is necessary for both safety and practical reasons as it will enable easier access for upcoming summer events including the fishing derby, nature days, and our always popular Saturday openings. Community members will have easier and safer access to fishing, hiking and recreating throughout the Reservoir all summer as a result. It will also enable us do a more thorough spring cleaning around the waterline. The timing is also crucial as it avoids interference with fish spawning cycles and any dramatic change for migratory birds.

Thank you to Mayor Jerramiah Healy, Council President Mariano Vega, the City Council, Andy Grey and the Department of Recreation, and the JCMUA for coordinating this project.

Please let us know if you have any questions!
